Founder

Raden Panji Setiosoeprapto, also known as Dave Nelson or uncle Dave to those close to him, was born in 1932 in Asembagus, East Java. Uncle Dave began practising pencak silat at a very young age. At the age of six, his uncles started training him in the family style Pamor, as was the tradition. In addition to training the family style, uncle Dave also practiced the Badai style alongside his brother Raden Panji Setiocipto. Furthermore, uncle Dave trained various other styles. As he hailed from an old Indonesian noble family, he was sent at a young age to a Buddhist monastery in Nakhon Pathom in what was then Siam, in accordance with family tradition. In this monastery, uncle Dave learned the fighting methods of the Siamese, now better known as Muay Thai. Additionally, uncle Dave also trained in boxing, sumo wrestling, and kendo. After his time in the monastery, he was appointed as the heir of the family style Pamor by his uncles Raden Widikdo and Raden Panji Bentung in 1941. Eventually, after spending some time living in Papua, Uncle Dave moved to the Netherlands, where he began teaching pencak silat sporadically from 1964. In 1969, he was officially appointed as pendekar by the IPSI in Surabaya. In 1993, he was once again appointed as pendekar, this time by Persilat (the international pencak silat federation).

In 1973, uncle Dave officially started teaching pencak silat Pamor Badai in Diemen. This made him the first to teach the family style outside of the family, thus giving birth to Pamor Badai. In 1989, uncle Dave formally registered the association Perguruan Pencak Silat Pamor Badai, making him the founder of Perguruan Pencak Silat Pamor Badai.

On 4 July 2020, uncle Dave officially transferred his position as kepala aliran and pendekar utama of Perguruan Pencak Silat Pamor Badai to his successors Marlon Tsie and Johann Ticoalu in a ceremony. On 3 September 2024, Raden Panji Setiosoeprapto passed away after a short illness, but his legacy, Pamor Badai, lives on.
